Leila Green, past Communications Intern:

“This was an extremely rewarding experience both professionally and personally. I was trusted early with a varied body of roles and responsibilities – from events management, to promotions, to media relations – which not only provided the opportunity to step straight on the learning curve, but also, crucially, the confidence to express myself and trust my judgment(s). The team is warm and welcoming, truly in love with TRO’s drive towards a ‘reading revolution’. It was a great working environment: encouraging creativity and nurturing individuality. Not every intern can say they get out what they put in – and more! By the end of the four months I felt proud of what I’d achieved, and grateful for being part of such an inspiring charity.”

Previous interns at The Reader Organisation have gone on to take up posts such as Editor at Vintage books, Marketing Manager at Princes Ltd, Digital Executive at a design company, Marketing Assistant at an architect’s firm, Accountant Graduate Scheme at KPMG, and a variety of positions within The Reader Organisation, including our current Communications Assistant, Training Administrator and National Development Manager.

We are pleased to announced two new job opportunities based at our head office in West Everton, Liverpool.

IT and Office Administrator

Full-time

£16,000 p.a.

As a result of an administrative re-structure and the installation of our own server we are able to offer this new and exciting systems based role. We are looking for an exceptional individual to oversee both the smooth running of our IT systems and our more general administrative systems and procedures.

This is a responsible role which calls for a highly organized, reliable, and flexible person who is able to juggle a number of different priorities and has a technical curiosity alongside a willingness to learn new IT skills.

Deadline for applications: Friday 9th September 2011 at 9.00am

For more information, please visit our website.

— — —

Receptionist

Full-time

£12,000 p.a.

In order to support our continued growth, we now require a dedicated receptionist. This is an important role sitting within our administrative team. As TRO’s receptionist you will usually be the first person a visitor, funder, beneficiary or commissioner meets, speaks to on the phone or corresponds with by email. We’ll be relying on you to make that all important good first impression, so above anything else you’ll need to have a good rapport with many different types of people helping them to feel looked after and at ease.

As well as looking after the reception we’ll also require you to undertake some additional administrative duties to help make TRO run as efficiently as possible.

Basic training will be provided if required.

Due to an unprecedented number of applications we are bringing forward the closing date for this post. Please note and advertise an amended closing date of midday on MONDAY 12TH SEPTEMBER 2011.

The Reader Organisation, with funding from the Trusthouse Charitable Foundation, is to offer a three-year paid apprenticeship to a young person aged 16-21 living in Wirral. The person they are looking for doesn’t need to have any qualifications or experience, or even an interest in reading to start with, but they do want someone who’s:

committed to working with them for three years

open-minded and willing to learn

friendly and who enjoys talking to people

serious about developing as a person

After an initial period of training and confidence building, the apprentice will read with Year 5 pupils in primary schools and follow them through, over a three-year period, to secondary school. Pupils will be selected for inclusion in the project by a variety of criteria: social isolation, literacy problems, negative attitude to reading and behavioural problems.

Included within the apprentice’s programme of work would be opportunities for further education which would build on their experience within The Reader Organisation, so they are equipped with the skills they need to start their career.

Kate McDonnell, The Reader Organisation’s Wirral Project Manager, says:

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who may not have had the best start in life – educationally, emotionally, or professionally – to be nurtured. It will get their working life off the ground and develop a love of reading which can then be passed on to the primary school children they’ll be trained to work with.

The Seacombe area of Wirral, where the apprentice will be based, is an area of acute deprivation: it scores badly on the Child Well-Being Index compared to the rest of Wirral and more than one in four young people are Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET). The Reader Organisation has discovered first hand that being turned on to books and reading at an early age can have a profound effect on the life chances of individuals growing up in deprived areas.

For people that want to find out more, The Reader Organisation are holding an informal drop-in afternoon on Friday 29th July, between 2pm-5pm, at The Lauries Community Centre, 142 Claughton Road, Birkenhead, CH41 6EY or contact Kate on 07973 247707 or katemcdonnell@thereader.org.uk

Full-time

Five year fixed-term contract

Salary £23,000 per annum

We recognise that volunteering has a key role to play in our future and are now are seeking to appoint a Volunteer Manager to run a new project funded by the National Lottery through the Big Lottery Fund. This new project will engage people experiencing or at risk of experiencing mental health problems in a range of volunteering opportunities across The Reader Organisation in the Merseyside area resulting in a free volunteer-run reading service to residents of residential care homes; providing them with meaningful activities.

TRO has established many reading groups in the Merseyside area, but will be offering volunteering opportunities for this beneficiary group for the first time; recognising the potential the provision would have upon people suffering from mental health issues. Links have been fully established with local library services and residential homes through current provision.
